Analgesia - Pain relief
Analyte - A substance or chemical constituent that is undergoing analysis
Anthropophilic - A disease that prefers humans
Anorectic - Loss of appetite
Ataxia - The loss of full control of bodily movements
ELISA - Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, a common laboratory technique which is used to measure the concentration of an analyte (usually antibodies or antigens) in solution
Endemic - A disease that is regularly found in a particular area, such as the UK
Fatality rate - The proportion of deaths compared with the number of cases
Genera - Plural of genus
Geophilic - A disease that prefers the soil or being underground
Husbandry - Management, care and handling of animals
Idiopathic - No known cause
Incubation Period - The time between exposure to a disease, and the onset of symptoms
Intact - An animal that has not been spayed or neutered
Ischemia - A restriction in blood supply to tissues causing a shortage of oxygen and glucose
Mesentery - A fold of tissue that attaches organs to the cell wall
Necrotic tissue - Dead tissue
Neurotropic - A disease that tends to attack or affect the nervous system
Notifiable - A disease that is required by law to be reported to the government - specifically Animal Health and Plant Agency, APHA
Palpating - Examining part of the body through touch
Parturition - Childbirth
Prognosis - The outcome of a disease, particularly in terms of recovery
Reservoir - A host organism that can harbour a pathogen indefinitely with no ill effects
Serotype - Distinct variations within a species of bacteria, viruses or among immune cells of different individuals
Ungulates - Hoofed animals
Vector - An organism which does not cause disease itself but spreads infection by transferring pathogens between hosts
Zoonotic - A disease that can go from animals to humans
